UK: Government outlines plans for the Universal Periodic Review (UPR)

Summary: During a conference to mark the end of the first cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), the UK outlined it's plans for the second cycle.

Peter Gooderham, Permanent Representative for the UK Mission to the UN in Geneva, used a closing conference on the UPR's first cycle to outline the Government's plans for the second cycle of reviews.

He outlined four key areas:

  • Strengthen civil society

Prior to drafting the national report for the UK's review at the Council, the government will ask civil society: "what works best for them".

  • Launch a website

A website will be launched focusing on the UPR, with a detailed timeline of activities taking place in the lead up to the UK's next review.

  • Parliamentary involvement

An assessment of how the UK parliament could become more involved in the UPR will be carried out.

  • Review all recommendations from 2008

In order to respect the efforts made by all the UN Member States who made recommendations to the UK's initial review, the government will review all recommendations made back in 2008.

    The UK's Review

The United Kingdom were reviewed in the very first session of the UPR, on 10 April 2008.
