Summary: London Play launches a short film today calling
for people to volunteer for childrenās
adventure playgrounds in the capital ā and
help ensure the future of these unique open
spaces in the heart of urban communities.
Over half of Londonās 85 adventure playgrounds rely on voluntary
management committees to stay open, but many playgrounds struggle to
find enough volunteers to run the committee.
Volunteers can help with different task such as administration, fundraising
and management. Most importantly, the volunteers need to be committed
to improving their communities for children and young people.
Made for the Year of the Volunteer 2005, the film also highlights how the
volunteers themselves benefit from helping the adventure playground ā
new skills, community involvement, and the satisfaction of providing a
valuable play space for local children and young people.
Volunteer Simon Rix say: āSpaces like these are oases for children, where
they can be themselves and do the things we used to do ā safe outdoor
spaces which many young people now donāt have access to. Get yourself
along to your nearest adventure playground and see what you can do!ā
Becky McLauchlan, Information Manager at London Play, adds: āThe
childrenās enjoyment, the involvement of the volunteers and the fantastic
outdoor space all demonstrate how valuable these adventure playgrounds
are to the children - and the volunteers that support them.ā
