UK: Child Soldiers Coalition appoints new director (18 January 2006)

Summary: The International Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers is pleased to announce the appointment of Victoria Forbes Adam as its new Director. Victoria joined the Coalition’s secretariat in July 2003 and was project leader for the Coalition's 2004 Child Soldiers Global Report.

Victoria brings to the post an in-depth knowledge of child soldier issues, research competency, project management and leadership skills. "We are delighted to have Victoria on board and look forward to working together on the Coalition’s forthcoming program of activities" said Martin Macpherson, chair of the Coalition’s steering committee.

The main priority for the new director is implementation of the Coalition's strategic plan, to be formally adopted by its steering committee in February 2006.

The Coalition undertook an in depth review of its work in 2005. This involved consultation with member and partner NGOs worldwide. A wide range of other stakeholders, including governments, the UN, and independent experts were also consulted for this major review. The resulting plan defines the strategic focus of the Coalition’s work and establishes clear objectives for the next five years.

The strategic plan addresses four key areas:

  • Universal ratification and implementation of international standards on child soldiers.
  • Advocacy to end the recruitment or use of child soldiers by armed political groups;
  • Addressing the culture of impunity for child recruiters
  • Promotion of improved and effective programs to reintegrate former child soldiers with their families and communities.
