Somalia: Training in Psycho-Social Issues

The workshop was held at IIDA center. Thirty-five representatives from local NGOs participated in the workshop.

Since the downfall of the former government in 1991, the situation in Somalia has deteriorated and the country has become engulfed in civil war, a lack of functioning central government, instability, increasing number of human rights violations. These factors have contributed to psycho-social problems across Somalia.

UNICEF had conducted study on child protection in Somalia and the findings of the study reveal the prevalence of psychosocial problems in the country. A strategy for psychosocial interventions was designed accordingly.

UNICEF Somalia in conjunction with TPO Uganda started to implement a psycho-social programme in Somalia. Primarily, TPO Uganda had trained 12 local trainers who will  give support to the children with psycho-social  problems and will facilitate psycho-social trainings across the country.

In this regard, SOCPD in collaboration with UNICEF implemented the psycho-social training workshop held in Merka 30 April - 4 May 2006.

The aim of the workshop was to give basic psychosocial support  training to Child Protection Advisors and other NGOs involved in child rights activities in Somalia to know, identify and help tackle psycho-social problems in families and communities.
