Three children died and four others were seriously wounded on 10/10/06 after a bomb exploded at Bananey village near Qoryoley district of L/Shabeele region of Somalia. Similar accidents have happened regularly in Somalia since the collapse of the former government in 1991. The explosive devices are widespread and distributed in community settlements, water reservoir or ponds, grazing land and particularly on playgrounds. There are no awareness campaigns or educational programmes which aim to prevent and protect underground mining or explosive devices. The situation that many families who are settled on former Somalia military camps must also be considered. In these camps, explosives were in planted by the government and by rebel groups before and after the civil war. There is therefore a real need to plan and implement large-scale programmes designed to minimise the impact of these devices which seriously affect the future of many children. Some are now disabled while others have died because of the damage caused by the explosives. Disabled children are prone experience neglect by their parents or by the community.
