PAKISTAN: Sindh Assembly passes resolution against corporal punishment in schools

[28 February 2013] -

The Sindh Assembly in Pakistan has unanimously passed a resolution against corporal punishment in both private and public schools in the Sindh province, after the issue was raised by the news channel 'Geo News' in one of their news programmes.

Earlier, the Chief Minister of the Punjab province, Shahbaz Sharif, also took notice of corporal punishment after watching the same programme, ‘Chal Parha', and said that he will introduce legislation against the issue in both public and private schools.

Mr. Sharif also ensured that the provincial government will take responsibility for the treatment of the young girl, Malaika, after her story of having her eye wounded by a teacher at a private school in Lahore was featured on the show.

The Geo News programme ‘Chal Parha’ is geared towards reforming the education system in Pakistan.
