PAKISTAN: Child rights defender murdered by Taliban, say reports

[MINGORA, 27 November 2008] - Pakistan Child Rights Committee member Ms Bakht Zeba has been murdered, allegedly by the Taliban in Mulakabad, Mingora, in the early hours of November 25, for advocating education for children in Swat, said a press release issued by the Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child (SPARC).

According to reports, the Taliban went to her house early in the morning and asked her to come out of the house. When she stepped out of house the Taliban allegedly sprayed her with machine gun at close range and mutilated her face.

On Universal Children's Day November 20, Ms Bakht, speaking at a meeting on child rights, criticised the Taliban for burning down schools and stopping children, especially girls, from going to school. She supported and promoted child rights in Swat and worked for the welfare of society.

Earlier the Taliban, through radio, had warned Ms Bakht that she faced dire consequences if she did not stop championing the rights of children in Swat valley.

Condemning the brutal murder of Ms Zeba Bakht, SPARC is demanding that the government takes note of this sad incident, and urgently seeks the apprehension of the murderers.
