New High Commissioner opens the 49th session of the CRC

In her opening statement, the new High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms. Navi Pillay, emphasised the importance she places on the work of the treaty bodies. She pledged the support of her office in their activities, as she considers their work to be one of the main pillars of the human rights system. She highlighted the uniqueness of the CRC, as it covers a broad spectrum of rights and was one of the only treaties with near universal ratification. The High Commissioner noted that she had consulted the jurisprudence of the Committee while serving as a judge in the International Criminal Court.
