Kenya: Child Prostitution a Menace at the Coast

Summary: Children as young as five years are being sexually exploited at the coast. Some tourists who frequent the Kenyan coast are alleged to be the financiers and perpetrators of the abuse. The revelation came up during a Sensitization Workshop for Children Agencies on the Children’s Act organized by KAACR on 30th Nov – 1st Dec 2005 in Mombasa.

Participants said children are lured into having sex with tourists along the beach. They claimed the children are also forced to take nude photographs, which the tourists later use to produce phonographic material in their countries.  High poverty level and pressure from parents were the main reasons given for the abuse.

The objectives of the workshop were; to equip children agencies with basic information on the principles and provisions of the UNCRC, the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of Children, the Children Act 2001 and identify gaps and challenges in implementation of the Children Act.

A total of 20 participants attended the workshop from 5 districts namely, Mombasa, Malindi, Kilifi, Kwale and Taita/Taveta.
