JAPAN: Record 37,343 child abuse cases in 2006

[12 July 2007] - Child consultation centers in Japan handled a record 37,343 cases of child abuse in fiscal 2006, up 2,871 from the previous year, the welfare ministry has said.

The figure is nine times higher than the 4,102 cases recorded 10 years earlier in fiscal 1996.

However, that figure will certainly rise when municipal governments release the number of cases they handled. Those statistics will not be available until autumn.

A welfare ministry official explained that members of the public, alarmed by high-profile cases where children had been badly injured or killed, were more vigilant about reporting suspected abuse cases in their neighbourhoods.
