PRESS RELEASE: EU Position on the Human Rights Council

The Presidency of the European Union has today confirmed to the President of the General Assembly, Jan Eliasson, its reaction to the draft resolution on the establishment of the Human Rights Council as follows:

"The EU considers that the President of the General Assembly’s draft resolution meets the basic requirements for the establishment of the Human Rights Council. The EU could therefore accept this text as a compromise.

The EU fully supports the President of the General Assembly’s efforts to secure the broadest possible backing for the early establishment of the Human Rights Council."
