Concern over rising violence in Haiti

Summary: The Special Representative of the Secretary General in Haiti and UNICEF Representative express their concern with the rise of violence and its consequences on children and their families

[PORT-AU-PRINCE, 8 July 2006] – The Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations in Haiti, Edmond Mulet and UNICEF Representative, Adriano Gonzalez-Regueral, have expressed outrage about current violent acts against children and their families in Haiti.

Insecurity has risen in recent days in Haiti, especially in some areas of Port-au-Prince such as Martissant and Grand-Ravine where more than 20 people, including children, have lost their lives.

The Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations in Haiti and UNICEF Representative urge that:
1. The acts of violence cease immediately.
2. The moral and physical security and integrity of children and women be ensured in all circumstances.

They call upon the Government of Haiti to take all measures to re-establish order in these areas to allow children to live in peace and security and to enjoy and realise their other rights. They also request that the rights of children and women be protected in the whole country and that perpetrators of acts of violence be brought to justice.
