Children in danger in Somalia IDP camps

Children in danger in Somalia IDP camps

Last night, on February 1st 2007, mortar shells were thrown over the capital of Somalia, Mogadishu. One of these mortar shells hit one of the main IDP camps in Mogadishu, killing seven people, including 3 children and seriously wounding 12 others.

Although the fighting between the Union of Islamic Courts and the transitional Federal government seems to get finished, there were recent ambush attacks in Mogadishu, targeting government offices.

The situation of IDPs was particularly very bad after they fled from their homes, and the most disadvantaged children are children in IDP camps and from minority clans.

The IDPs have no protection and children are encountered all kinds of violence. The situation has reached unacceptable level insecurity and lawlessness with the recent mortar shells.

Somali Child Protection and Development (SOCPD) visited the IDP camp and witnessed people fleeing from the camp, not knowing were to go. As we visited Banadir and Madina hospitals in Mogadishu, we have been told that more than seven children are in the hospitals.

Dr. Abdirahmed Abdulahi Abdi in Banadir hospital talked to us about the current situation of the children wounded last night by mortar shells in the IDP camp in Mogadishu.  He described their situation as very bad because they have serious injuries. In addition, the hospital was facing a medical shortage and the children came from marginalized families who couldn’t afford to pay medical fees.

We are asking the international community to give their attention the current situation of children in Somalia.
