BUSINESS AND HUMAN RIGHTS: Last chance to push for children's rights representation in new UN Working Group

Summary: With the deadline fast approaching for nominations for the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights, NGOs have one last chance to ensure children's rights are represented amongst the five experts.

Guiding Principles

On 16 June, the Council endorsed a new set of Guiding Principles for Business and Human Rights designed to provide - for the first time - a global standard for preventing and addressing the risk of adverse impacts on human rights linked to business activity.

Working Group

On endorsing the Guiding Principles, the Council decided to establish a Working Group, which will consist of five independent experts with a balanced geographical representation. The experts, who will take on the role for a period of three years, will be appointed at the 18th session of the Human Rights Council, which will take place from 12 - 30 September this year.

What you can do!

With the disappointment of seeing children's rights excluded from the Guiding Principles, the nomination process for the five independent experts who will make up the Working Group has taken on greater importance. This is the last chance to nominate a candidate with experience in children's rights to the Group before the upcoming deadline.

Nomination deadline

A Consultative Group will propose a list of candidates for the above positions to the President of the Human Rights Council one month prior to the 18th session (12 - 30 September).

Applications to the vacancies should be submitted by 31 July 2011, to hrcspecialprocedures@ohchr.org.
