Summary: A draft law stipulating the rights of children was discussed yesterday by the Shura Council as it convened for its fifth weekly session.
[18 January 2011] - The focus of the session was on article 10 which bans child labour below the age of 15. It aims to protect children's safety and health and preserve rights featured in the draft law. Under the proposed law, children will have priority in terms of prevention and relief aid in case of natural disasters and wars. The state should commit to ensure the child's right to a pollution-free environment. It also proposes to guarantee other basic rights, including pre-natal and post-natal medical tests to diagnose any hereditary and life-threatening diseases. Regular medical check-ups for children will also be included in the law to ensure healthy mental and physical growth, including vaccination. The Shura also renewed a co-operation agreement with the Bahrain Political Development Institute (BPDI). The council president sealed the deal with His Majesty King Hamad's adviser for media affairs and BPDI board of trustees' chairman Nabeel Al Hamer. Mr Al Saleh stressed the importance of promoting political development, describing it as crucial to consolidate Bahrain's democratisation process. He paid tribute to His Majesty King Hamad for initiating his reform project which put Bahrain on the path of modernisation and progress.
