AZERBAIJAN: Girl killed by Armenian booby-trap toy

Summary: A 13-year-old Azerbaijani girl was killed after the booby-trap toy she was trying to pick up from the river, and which had been dropped there at the Armenian side, exploded. This is the latest in a series of similar incidents perpetrated by Armenia that have resulted in the death of Azerbaijani children. International organisations have been criticised for their lack of coverage of such incidents.

[15 July 2011] - The tragic death Azerbaijani girl as a result of an act of vandalism by Armenia in Tovuz District will be raised with international organisations.

Member of the Azerbaijani Parliament from Tovuz, Ganira Pashayeva has announced that she will raise [with the Parliament Assembly of the Council of Europe and all other international organisations] the [case of] a 13-year-old Azerbaijani girl, Aygun Shahmaliyeva, who died after a toy dog with an explosive device installed inside and dropped into the Tovuz River on the Armenian side that flows through Alibayli village, exploded on 14 July. The girl's mother, 32-year-old Elnara Shahmaliyeva, was severely wounded in the incident.

The MP, who is currently on a visit to Turkey, noted that along with Azerbaijan’s state bodies, diapora organisations and NGOs should also raise the world awareness about this act of vandalism.

This is not first brutal murder of a child by Armenia, the MP added.

'The same thing happened in the same area several years ago. Two children were killed and one was injured in an explosion while trying to pick up a toy dropped into the river by the Armenian side. Furthermore, a nine-year-old resident of Bash Garvand village of Agdam District Fariz Badalov was killed by Armenian sniper while playing in a yard of his house on 8 March this year. This accident is yet another proof that Armenia pursues a policy aimed at murder of innocent children,' the MP stated.

Unfortunately, the fact that international organisations, in particular, OSCE Minsk Group do not take any response steps towards the acts of vandalism by international organisations and their indifferent attitude encourages Armenia to take further brutal acts against humanity before the eyes of the international community, Pashayeva emphasised.
