ARGENTINA: New law approved lowering age of majority

[BUENOS AIRES, 3 December 2009] – Argentina's national Senate has approved a law lowering the age of majority from 21 to 18.

This step means that 18-year-old citizens will acquire full civil and commercial rights, including the right to sign contracts, start commercial businesses and get married - without parental consent.

However, parents still have an obligation to maintain their children until they turn 21 where they still live in the family home, are not employed, continue to study and/ or are not employed.

The High Chamber adopted the document by 42 votes in favour to one against. The initiative, which was put forward by the Rubén Giustiniani Socialist Party, took four years to go through.
