XI International Human Rights Colloquium: “Implementation of International and Regional Human Rights Decisions and Recommendations”

The XI International Colloquium seeks to bring together a diverse group of young activists and scholars from the Global South to collectively discuss  the implementation at the national level of decisions and recommendations given by regional and international systems for human rights protection.

Since its creation, the United Nations (UN) and regional human rights systems have been fundamental in the protection of rights, and they have contributed substantially to the improvement of the Rule of Law in various different regions. These mechanisms have, in many cases, been the final remedy available to victims when local institutions fail to protect basic rights. However, despite its importance, many are the challenges for the implementation at the national level of international and regional human rights decisions and recommendations.

In this sense, the programme of the XI Colloquium will seek to allow the exchange of experiences, not just among activists but amongst academics and members of the systems for human rights protection as well.

The International Human Rights Colloquium is an annual forum, organized since 2001, that brings together human rights activists and scholars from Latin America, Africa, and Asia for one week. The objective of the Colloquium is to create a space for participants to exchange experiences and knowledge, access innovative perspectives regarding different human rights issues and create new partnerships.

The Colloquium aims to create a multiplier effect that benefits both the participants and their organizations.

As in previous years, the programme of activities will include lectures, workshops and seminar. In the morning sessions, general conferences will be held and in the afternoon sessions, participants will take part in workshops and seminars, discuss case studies and make visits to organisations.

Given the central theme of the XI Colloquium, we encourage the application of human rights activists who have experience in working to implement international and regional recommendations at the national level, or are interested in expanding their work in these fields. Human rights activists from the Global South with at least two years of work experience in the field will be selected.

After selection and until the Colloquium begins in São Paulo, participants will be responsible for some readings and other preparatory tasks.

The XI Colloquium is sponsored by the Open Society Foundations, Ford Foundation, John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Sigrid Rausing Trust, Embassy of Ireland in Brazil and The Channel Foundation

We are looking forward to seeing you in São Paulo, Brazil!
