Workshop: ACYA Alternative Report to UN Committee on the Rights of the Child

Background & Purpose of Workshop
p>In 2003, ACYA made a substantial written report to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child, supported children and young people to make a video called Whakarongo Mai / Listen Up about their views and experiences, and met with the UN Committee. The UN Committee's recommendations to the New Zealand Government included actions on child poverty, violence, discrimination, services for children and young people, to act on existing policies, and improve funding and co-ordination of services. Since then, ACYA has been advocating to Government to act on these recommendations.

In 2009, ACYA, as the collective voice of its members and their organisations, will once again be submitting a report to the UN Committee, outlining progress in New Zealand on effectively implementing the principles and provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

While the report complies with a structure required by the UN Committee, ACYA has some flexibility in determining the manner in which the content of the report is organised to represent key New Zealand themes and issues.

This report should be a result of a joint effort between our member organisations that actively work with children and youth, and include input from children and youth themselves.

The probable timeline with the UN Committee is:

  • New Zealand Government Report - November 2008
  • ACYA Report to the UN Committee - 2009
  • Resolution of questions raised by the reports
  • Meeting with the UN Committee - 2009 or 2010
  • Recommendations from the UN Committee to the New Zealand Government

The purpose of this workshop is to confirm our collective perspective on this report; agree the "essence" of what should be communicated; and finding ways of working together over the next few years to develop this important report.

It is also an important opportunity to strengthen the ACYA network; exchange information about members activities, concerns, hopes and plans; while reinforcing ACYA commitment to improving the rights and wellbeing of the children and young people of New Zealand.
