UPR PRE-SESSION: Dates announced for 15th session

Summary: UPR Info has announced the dates for the next pre-session, ahead of the 15th session of the Universal Periodic Review.

UPR Info is organising a pre-session in Geneva, Switzerland, to discuss the human rights situation of States to be reviewed at the 15th session of the UPR Working Group to be held from 21 January to 1 February: Bahamas, Barbados, Botswana, Burundi, France, Israel, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Mali, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Tonga and the United Arab Emirates.

The purpose of these pre-sessions is to save time and resources to civil society organisations (CSOs) and to enable them to meet several delegations at once. For delegations, these meetings offer them the opportunity to be briefed by CSOs about the human rights situation in the State under Review (SuR).

The pre-session for each SuR lasts one hour. The National human rights institution and CSOs are given the floor one after another to share their assessment of the human rights situation in the country since the previous review and the progress accomplished by the SuR to implement the recommendations.

All Permanent Missions, including the State under Review, are invited to attend. Ten minutes are dedicated at the end of each briefing to ask questions to CSOs.

The pre-sessions for the 15th Working Group session (21 January - 1 February 2012) will take place from 26 to 30 November at the Centre International de Conférence de Genève (CICG), 17 rue de Varembé, Geneva, Room 5 and 6. A detailed scheduled will be available on this page at the end of October.

In order to ensure the smooth organisation of those pre-sessions, Permanent missions are kindly asked to let us know which pre-session they are planning to attend.

CSOs interested in participating and taking the floor need to fill in the form (English, French) and to return it via email by October 19th.

The pre-sessions are organised thanks to the support of the City of Geneva, the Canton of Geneva, the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland and IrishAid
