Turkey: Monitoring Children's Rights

Summary: ICC in collaboration with the Ankara Bar Association is holding a symposium in Ankara on April 17 to brief and inform child rights advocates on the monitoring and reporting processes of the implementation of the "Convention on the Rights of the Child".

The International Children's Centre (ICC), in collaboration with the Ankara Bar Association Children's Rights Commission, will be holding a symposium in Ankara on 17 April covering the monitoring of the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).

The one-day seminar held as part of and under the framework of the 23 April "Children's Day" celebrations to be held throughout Turkey, intends to give information to advocates of children's rights on the monitoring process of the CRC implementation with emphasis on the importance of the reporting issue.

In the morning session of the symposium, South East Europe Child Rights Action Network (SEECRAN) director Gorano Flaker will give a presentation on "The Importance of Alternative Reports submitted to the Committee on the Rights of the Child by Non Governmental Organisations" while UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) Child Protection Consultant Seda Akso will give a presentation on "UNICEF's contributions to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child".

In the afternoon session of the symposium, Ankara Bar Association Children's Rights Commission Chairperson, attorney Turkay Asma and ICC Rights of the Child coordinator and consultant Gulgun Mufto will manage a discussion panel where the participant speakers will be United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child member Nevena Vuckovic-Sahovic, Filiz Birinci and Sevil Lale Kurt from the Social Services and Child Protection Agency and Adem Arkadas from the Children's Rights Programme.
