TURKEY: IX International Training Course on Sexual and Reproductive Health of Adolescents/Young People

The “IX International Training Course on Sexual and Reproductive Health of Adolescents/Young People” will be held in Ankara, Turkey from 2-13 November 2009. The course is designed to build the capacity of health professionals and programme managers working in ministries, universities, social centres and NGOs in Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Commonwealth of Independent States. For this year, a total of 25 candidates from these regions will be considered for training in various topics related to the sexual and reproductive health of adolescents and youth.

Course Learning Objectives:

  • To strengthen the capacity of participants to use and/or gather information on reproductive and sexual health.
  • To understand the concept of “adolescent/youth-friendly SRH programmes and services.”
  • To address the gender component of SRH needs and improve strategies to develop gender sensitive programmes and services.
  • To understand adolescent physical and social growth and development
  • To share experiences in the field of sexual and reproductive health programmes and services for adolescents/youth
  • To identify knowledge gaps and appropriate interventions to promote reproductive health rights of adolescents 
  • To work towards the identification of SRH priority areas of regional/national/local relevance 
  • To develop sound action plans pertaining to SRH with a specific focus on these priority areas.

Organisers

International Children’s Center in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

Contributing Institutions

Faculty and lecturers from international organisations (UNFPA, WHO) universities (Başkent University, Eskişehir Osmangazi University, Hacettepe University, Kırıkkale University) government institutions (The Turkish Ministry of Health, Mother and Child Health/Family Planning General Directorate) and NGOs will assist in delivery of this training course.

Selection of Participants

Participants will be selected to represent a diverse and interactive group with a range of experience, educational backgrounds and specialisms working particularly in the field of sexual and reproductive health of adolescents/young people in the regions of Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Commonwealth of Independent States. The goal is to enhance dissemination of information and help the efforts in spreading youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services in the region.

The course is aimed at managers of adolescent/young people sexual and reproductive health programs, service providers, physicians and nurses, midwives as well as social scientists and researchers who are working on adolescent(10-19 years) and youth (10-24 years) sexual and reproductive health in the field, policy and the decision-making levels.

A total of twenty-five applicants will be considered and the preference will be given to applications from the following countries:
Afghanistan, Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Romania, Russia, Turkey and Uzbekistan.

Language

The language of lecturers and discussions of this course is in English. Hence, it is important that applicants should have adequate English proficiency.
