Towards a professional academic qualification on Children’s Rights

The European Network of Masters on Children’s Rights (ENMCR) is developing a new, international and interdisciplinary MA study programme on children’s rights, starting September / October 2007. In order to link this Master's as close as possible to existing needs and expectations in the work field, ENMCR is organising a participative stakeholder workshop at the University of Amsterdam on 28th September 2006. Places are still available for NGOs and public agency representatives.

 

In the workshop, organisations will have the opportunity to exchange experiences with other stakeholders, and in this way both contribute to and gain new insights on further qualification of professionals in the field of childhood and children’s rights. The meeting will provide a unique opportunity for NGOs and public agencies in Europe to ensure that their organisations’ thoughts, requirements and wishes are reflected in the development of the planned joint MA curriculum on children’s rights.

The programme consists of a plenary session in the morning and a number of workshops in the afternoon. First, plans regarding the new European Master's will be presented. Then, a number of key stakeholders from different fields (NGO, EU, Youth and Academia) will present their ideas and suggestions for the programme. The stakeholder presentations are meant as a first inventory of views and opinions, they will serve as a starting point for discussion. These discussions will then be developed further in the afternoon workshops.

  • WG 1: Cooperation between practice and academia
    Possibilities for long term cooperation, staff qualification, contracting possibilities

The aim is to define what staff qualification is needed by the professional world and what can be offered by the Master's. Furthermore, different models of long term cooperation between the European Master's and the professional world will be discussed.

  • WG 2: Children’s participation; what does it mean, how can it be achieved?
    Methods, cases, best practice examples

The objective is to find out, what skills and working tools graduates of a European MA on Children's Rights should have in order to find solutions for realising effective participation of children in society and in formal political processes, in order to include imparting of this knowledge and tools in the Curricula of the MA.

  • WG 3: Children’s Rights in Europe / in the EU
    What are the main issues concerning children’s rights and their implementation on a European level? In how far can the European Master address perceived deficits and contribute to the improvement of children’s rights in Europe?

The working group will be moderated by a member of the European Parliament and a representative of ENMCR. The objective is to discuss children’s rights on a European level and elaborate on possible contributions of the European Master's programme to improve the situation. What skills and resources are needed to strengthen children’s rights on a European level?

  • WG 4: Children’s Rights as an international responsibility 
    What tools and what competences are required to address children’s rights in a global context?

The European Master on Children’s Rights not only addresses the issue of children’s rights on European and national levels within the EU but views childhood and children’s rights in a global context. The objective of the working group is to define what tools and what competences are required to meet the international responsibility to contribute to making children’s rights a reality worldwide.
