Separated Children & Young People in the Asylum System

Our annual conference 'Separated Children & Young People in the Asylum System' will be held on October 10th, 2012 in London. 

The conference will combine guest speakers and practical expert sessions, ensuring that the conference is relevant, informative and practical.


Speakers include:

  • Lisa Killham, UKBA Childrens Champion - UKBA’s approach to children - overview and future plans. 
  • Matiullah Hadier -  A former Children's Section client sharing personal experiences of the system. 
  • Nadine Finch, Barrister, Garden Court Chambers -  Presenting key findings and recommendations from forthcoming UNHCR /UNICEF guidance on the best interests of children. 
  • Nev Jeffries, British Red Cross, Head International Tracing and Message Services - How to help children restore links with family whilst ensuring their safety. 
  • Prof Ravi Kohli, Prof of Child Welfare, University of Bedfordshire -  Presenting closing remarks on the conference.

  1. Age Assessment - How to make your age assessment lawful and achieve best practice - expert tbc.  Assessing the age of a separated child is one of the most difficult tasks a social worker will undertake and the decision has very serious consequences. Read more.
  2. Trafficked Children - Identifying and safeguarding trafficked children - expertSian Turner from the UK Human Trafficking Centre [UKHTC].  The UKHTC received 489 referrals last year of children who had potentially been trafficked, though the number is feared to be far more.  The session will provide more information on how to identify victims and roles of actors in the process.  Read more.
  3. Preparing a Human Rights Assessment for refused young people - with expertZubier Yazdani, Pierce Glynn Solicitors.  Young people who have been refused asylum may exhaust their appeal rights but still in the UK.  This session will explore what factors should be considered when assessing the human rights of a young person in this situation.  Read more.
  4. Making decisions on children’s asylum claims - with expert Ruth Hadland,UKBA, Regional Corporate Partner Lead - UASC's & Vulnerable Adults.  This session will give a UKBA case owner's perspective on the decison making process and how decisions are reached.  Read more.
