Regional Workshop for Leading Media Professionals on Furthering Children and Women's Human Rights in South and Central Asia

Summary: This workshop is organised by Save the Children and UNIFEM.

The first regional Workshop for Leading Media Professionals on Furthering Children and Women's Human Rights in South and Central Asia will be held on 8-9 February 2007 in Kathmandu, Nepal.

As rights-based organisations, Save the Children Sweden and UNIFEM are working towards ensuring that all citizens, including girls and boys have the right and the opportunity to participate and be involved in decisions that impact on their lives. Save the Children Sweden and UNIFEM recognise that principles of Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and Child Rights Programming (CRP) namely Participation, Non-Discrimination and Accountability can collectively be realised by working closely with media. In particular, the UNCRC states that all girls and boys should have access to child-friendly and relevant information. At the same time, UNCRC and CEDAW state the need to work with media for furthering child rights and women's rights and puts the obligations on media like other duty bearers to promote, fulfil and realise child rights and women's rights.

The workshop seeks to promote a common understanding of child rights reporting and develop a regional media network to strengthen children and women's human rights in South and Central Asia.

The organisers invite media professionals from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka that demonstrated leadership on furthering children and women's human rights in the region.
