Regional Commissions' Training of Trainers on Violence Against Women

Summary: ESCWA in collaboration with the Center for Women, and other Regional Commissions are implementing a United Nations Development Account project on “Enhancing capacities to eradicate violence against women through networking of local knowledge communities”, has organised a Training of Trainers Workshop on Violence against Women (VAW). An aim of the workshop is to develop an understanding of gender-based violence, its characteristics, causes, and impact on women and children. The workshop will be held at the UN-House in Beirut, from 4 to 7 May 2010.

The Statistics Division at the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) incollaboration with the Center for Women, and other Regional Commissions are implementing a United Nations Development Account project on “Enhancing capacities to eradicate violence against women through networking of local knowledge communities”, and will be organising a Training of Trainers Workshop on Violence against Women (VAW): Pilot testing of module in pilot countries. The workshop will be hosted by ESCWA at the UN-House in Beirut, from 4 to 7 May 2010.

The aim of the Workshop is to train survey managers on how to conduct a VAW survey; test the effectiveness of the module for collecting data on VAW and related procedures. The aim is to provide a tested tool to enable countries to collect a minimum set of information to measure the prevalence of physical and sexual violence through appropriate population-based surveys.

The training aims to:

  • Increase the sensitivity of participants to gender issues at a personal as well as a community level
  • Develop a basic understanding of gender-based violence, its characteristics, causes and impact on women and children
  • Understand the goals of the VAW survey/module and how to use it in a dedicated survey or as add-on study
  • Become familiar with the module and other accompanying materials
  • Have basic understanding of the indicators and how they are derived from the module
  • Understand interviewing skills and ethical and safety guidelines specific for VAW research
  • Know how to adapt and translate the moduleKnow how to organize interviewer selection and training
  • Know how to supervise and support the interviewers
