Regional Child Rights Committee Establishment Workshop

Article 36 of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE) Constitution asserts the rights of the child. Moreover the Convention on the Right of the Child (CRC) and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACRWC) have been ratified by Ethiopia and forms part of the national legal system. As is the case in other field of rights of citizens, promotion and protection of child rights indispensably requires institutional mechanisms for its enforcement.

Looking into the federal and regional mechanisms, there are several existing governmental and non-governmental organizations with varying degree and areas of responsibilities for the realization of the children’s rights as enshrined in the CRC, ACRWC and national laws.

Regional Child Rights Committee is one of the duty bearers which are responsible for the realization of the rights of children as enshrined under the Constitution and international agreements ratified by Ethiopia.

Eventhough the Child Rights Committees that are established at zonal, woreda and tabia level in Tigray region are working for the realization of the rights of children they do not have linkage to the Regional Child Rights Committee until now. Therefore, REST in collaboration with Radda Barnen and Bureau of Labor and Social Affairs (BoLSA) are preparing to conduct a workshop for Child Rights Committee establishment at Regional level. The workshop is going to be held in Mekelle city, the regional capital.

Taking in to consideration the profound commitment of the Ethiopian government in  adopting the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Africa Charter, it is extremely important for the Regional Child Rights Committee to give maximum effort to wards the effective implementation of the provisions of the Convention and the Charter.
