No(rmal) Childhood in Palestine? - Photo Exhibition 2004-2005

Summary: The exhibition focuses on the impacts of the
occupation on the life of Palestinian children. It
explores their strange playgrounds: children
playing in front of checkpoints, children playing
at throwing stones at soldiers- a game that
could be deadly; children playing in the rubble
of their own houses or in a kindergarten
threatened by demolition order.

OBJECTIVES

- Artistic and cultural: Display recent pictures of artistic value;
Show Palestine and Palestinians children in a less sensational
way; illustrate daily life, its difficulties but also its smiles.
- Educational: Present some legal concepts of international law
such as human rights and humanitarian law; Encourage
discussions on the effect of the occupation on children.
- Activist: Raise awareness on the situation and future of
Palestinian children; Encourage people to react in a positive way
by writing a card to their government and to the Israeli
government urging them to respect the rights of the child and
international law in the Palestinian Occupied Territories.
- Humanitarian: Raise funds for a young disabled Palestinian
woman, Amani, who urgently needs a new back surgery and
renovate her house, which must be adapted to her needs.

CONTENT OF THE EXHIBITION

- Around 50 Black and White photographs (30x40);
- Around 30 digital colour photographs;
- 4 giant pictures of the Wall which will add a striking effect;
- 3 thematic posters (one on the settlements, one on Abu Dis
University which is surrounded by the Wall; one comparing the
Wall in Palestine to the Berlin Wall);
- Maps;
- Descriptive texts and case studies coming from our field
reports and specifically applied in relation to the rights of the child
and international law.

ACTIVITIES AROUND THE EXHIBITION

- In Holland: the exhibition will be associated with research
institutes and universities that will organise conferences and
seminars.
- In France: the exhibition will be linked with an educational
project with high schools. The photographer will directly intervene
in schools to present her work to the students that will be
encouraged to participate to the exhibition by displaying their
own work.
- In Luxembourg and in Ireland, the exhibition will be coupled
with NGOs’ activities and events.

PROGRAMME 2004/2005

The exhibition has a strong international dimension. The
programme of the exhibition is the following: Ireland (September
2004), Holland (October 2004), Belgium (November 2004), France
(November/December 2004), Luxemburg (December 2004) and
