Launch of the 'International Day of the Girl'

Plan International will be launching the first International Day of the Girl Child on the 11th October 2012 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva at 16.30.

The UN designated the 11th October as the International Day of the Girl Child.

This day will help to raise awareness of the persistent challenges girls are facing, highlight education as a key empowerment factor and celebrate girls as powerful agents of change.

Plan is using this day to launch its global campaign Because I am a Girl to fight gender inequality, promote girls’ rights and lift millions of girls out of poverty. The Campaign will reach millions of girls worldwide, ensuring their access to schools, skills, services, livelihood, participation and protection.  Plan will also present its 2012 report on the State of the World’s Girls ‐ Learning for Life.

To do this, Plan will host an exciting event at the Palais des Nations in Geneva on 11th October, 2012, from 16.30 to 18.00 Room XXV together with the Permanent Missions of Canada, Finland, Peru, Switzerland and Turkey. It will include a panel discussion of experts in the field of child rights and education. An interactive reception will follow at 18.00 in the Serpentine Bar with live music and the Young Reporters who will engage with the participants.
