International Child Health

Summary: Organised in collaboration with the
Centre for International Health of the
Burnet Institute and the Centre for
International Child Health in
Melbourne, this six-day training
course is designed for health
program planners, maternal and child
health professionals and workers.
Course Objectives:
- Describe the most important global causes of childhood
mortality and morbidity;
- Understand the broader social determinants of health;
- Describe the global frameworks, institutions, and current
programs including WHO, UNICEF, development banks and global
funds;
- Understand the current strategies for prevention and
management of important causes of childhood illness, including
their evidence base;
- Identify new approaches to the promotion of child development
and child human rights;
- Describe the current frameworks in community child health and
school health;
- Understand effective child public health program development;
and
- Identify priorities for research in international health.

Course Content:
- Overview of child health morbidity and mortality;
- Introduction to the social and cultural determinants of health;
- Interventions for prevention and treatment of childhood illness
including Integrated Management of Child Illness (IMCI), feeding
and nutrition and immunisation;
- Strategies to promote child development, human rights based
approaches;
- Health promotion and advocacy; and
