39th International Youth

Summary: Since its inception in 1966 in
response to UNESCO's
recommendation at the 13th session
of the UNESCO General Conference
to emphasize youth programmes,
the IYC has become an annual
tradition for the Korean National
Commission for UNESCO (KNCU).
The up-coming 39th International Youth Camp (IYC) to take place
during the periods of 13-24 July,10-21 August, 18-28 August
and 7-18 September, 2004 at six different localities of the
Republic of Korea. Since its inception in 1966 in response to
UNESCO's recommendation at the 13th session of the UNESCO
General Conference to emphasize youth programmes, the IYC
has become an annual tradition for the Korean National
Commission for UNESCO (KNCU). Over the years, the IYC has
served to enrich the lives of approximately 4,000 youth through
camp programmes fostering international understanding and
promoting ideas of culture of peace and sustainable
development.

In particular this year, the 39th IYC is more focused on community
projects for the environment under the general theme "Steps
toward a Sustainable Future". The outline of seven projects has
been formulated to address the reality that local and national
communities are beginning to actively apply the concept of
sustainability in many different ways, and seeks to develop
images of a sustainable future that is both culturally appropriate
and locally relevant. Throughout two weeks of fun but challenging
workcamp programmes, including thematic workshops,
intercultural exchanges and discussions on international
issues, participants will experience impressive opportunities for a
sense of teamwork and self-improvement while they work
together for a common goal and concerted action.
