In November 2001 the UN General Assembly requested the Secretary-General to conduct an in-depth study on violence against children. This request followed a recommendation for such a study from the Committee on the Rights of the Child. The NGO community has a vital role to play in the execution of the study and the NGO Group for the CRC has formed a new subgroup to facilitate NGO participation.

Core areas of work

Since its inception in May 2002, the subgroup on Children and Violence has focused primarily on the emerging UN Study on violence against children and on follow-up activities to the Special Session on Children. These will remain of primary concern to the subgroup with the additional emphasis on effecting change on issues relating to the protection of children at the annual Commission on Human Rights.
